Test-Drive Christianity

We often test-drive several new vehicles before selecting and purchasing one. How does it drive? Do I like the placement of controls? What features does it have? What features are missing? Color, make, style? While this may be fine for purchases of vehicles, it is not right to test-drive our faith in Christ.

For instance, a common test-drive for single adult Christians today is regarding living together or sex prior to marriage. Judeo-Christian Values are counter culture to this and many other cultural norms today. However prudish you believe them to be, they are Biblical values that are good for our well-being and relationship with God, and we should follow for obedience sake. The most common arguments are “Flee the appearance of evil” (I Thessalonians 5:22) and sex is preserved for marriage (Hebrews 13:4). Other common test-drives are pornography, little white lies, adultery, and simple routines of disobedience.

Our calling as Christians is to be examples to non-believers and other Christians who may be struggling in areas of their own walk. Yes, when we fail and fall into sin, we serve a God of grace and forgiveness. However, our faith journey should not be a perpetual test-drive, where we refuse to receive all Christ purchased for us. Repentance means that we turn from our sin, and God helps us overcome our sins (examine the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15). If we fail again, He is able and just to forgive us (I John 1:9). However, repentance is greater than just the forgiveness of sins, it is a turning away from the sin we have committed. Repentance is not seeking God’s forgiveness while we knowingly remain in that sin. For those Christians who live together or are have sex before marriage, they are test-driving their relationship to see if they have obtained lifelong love. Research continues to prove that couples who live together prior to marriage increase their risk of divorce. Pornography strengthens its grips producing false intimacy. White lies turn into bigger lies and adultery leads to shattered relationships.

Christianity will never be comfortable in this world. It is counter culture. The marriage relationship remains the focus of satanic attack. If Satan can distort the marriage relationship, then there is a distortion in our understanding of our relationship with God. The design of marriage is to be the most precious and lasting human relationship. It is symbolic of the kind of relationship man is to enjoy with God. From God’s perspective divorce is not an option (Jeremiah 3:14). The Wedding and honeymoon emulates the conversion of an individual into a life with Christ. It is a new beginning. The intimacy experience is new, fresh, and exciting. We are no longer alone; we joined with Christ and the two shall become one.

In life, we take different paths on a test drive. We strive to do it alone. For many of us, that path was or is disastrous. Sometimes, on our test drive we venture into other areas of sin, never reaching our goals. These entanglements lead us further down the spiraling hole of life without God, ending in spiritual bankruptcy, having no substance or depth. Sometimes, we take God on a test drive. We go through the motions of being a Christian, however never really surrendering ourselves to become fully conformed with Christ. We want the forgiveness of our sins; however, we want to remain in some of them. Embrace the fullness of what God purchased for you and wants to bring into your life! Repent in the true meaning of the word. Strive to live a life without sin, knowing however, you may fail from time to time and God is ready to forgive again as you repent. Become radically in love with Jesus granting Him access to every area of your life. End the test-drive.

God Always Has Something Greater in Mind!

Understanding Our Suffering
Suffering is one of the hardest subjects for many Christians to understand and explain. Many Christians deny that Suffering exists. It challenges our relationships, our explanation to unbelievers, and sometimes can cause us to doubt our own beliefs. Few offer answers, other than the standard paraphrased Scriptures like “God will use all things for his God,” which is found in Romans 8:28 or “Though he slay me, yet will I trust him” found in Job 13:15.

The Human Experience of Suffering
In our suffering, we must learn to trust God regardless of the cause. Misunderstanding our suffering clouds our approach to prayer, comfort, and hope. When the Bible is examined human suffering manifest or presents itself in several different ways: just plain evil, results of a fallen man, judgment, or tests permitted by God. Identifying the type of suffering enables us to be more direct in our communication to God or our need. It allows our prayers to be more effective and enables us to find hope in the midst of our suffering. When the type of our suffering is identified, we better understand how to trust God and believe he will use our suffering for his good.

Satan often gets more credit than he deserves, but there is the truth that Satan is roaming to and fro seeking whom he may devour. “Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8 AMP) “The Lord said to Satan, ‘From where have you come?’ Then Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming around on the earth and from walking around on it.’” (Job 1:7 AMP) Some today will deny the aspect of spiritual warfare and dismiss the its relevance today.
God always has something greater in mind.

Often in the midst of our suffering we ask, “Why?” Searching for answers. Throughout the Bible we see human suffering and how God fulfills His Promise in Romans 8:28.

“We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose.” Romans 8:28 AMPC

Over and over the Bible is clear, God uses the suffering of His people for greater purposes.

Biblical Examples of Suffering
  • Abraham nearly sacrificed his son, however in the end God had something greater in mind by providing a ram in the thicket for the sacrifice. Genesis 22:1-19
  • Joseph was thrown in a pit and sold by his brothers and later in-prisoned, however in the end God had something greater in mind and he became second in the kingdom. Genesis 37-41
  • Hagar was thrown out and her and her son nearly starved to death, however in the end God had something greater in mind and provided a well for nourishment. Genesis 21
  • Job in an instant lost everything, however in the end God had something greater in mind and restored double in the end. Job 1 and 42
  • David was chased by King Saul who desired to kill him, however in the end God had something greater in mind and David became the greatest king of Israel. I Samuel 19, 23 and 2 Samuel 5-8
  • Zachariah and Elizabeth were barren, however in the end God had something greater in mind and late in life Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist who proclaimed “the way of the Lord.” Luke 1:5-80, Mathew 3.
  • Steven was stoned to death, however in the end God had something greater in mind and translated him out of his pain into a vision of his Savior. Acts 7:54-60
  • The Disciples felt lost after the crucifixion of their Lord, Savior, and friend, however in the end God had something greater in mind and Jesus is raised from the dead and later sends the Holy Spirit.
  • Paul suffered greatly through prison, beatings, and ultimately death, however in the end God had something greater in mind and 2,000 years later the existence of our Christian faith can be found in our churches today where his letters and writings comprise a third of the New Testament.
  • When God created Adam and Eve, He had something greater in mind. Eternal existence of love from His Creation.

These are just a few examples. No matter what we are suffering on earth, you can be confident that God has something greater in mind.

Encouragement for the Reader

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you will have wars.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 AMP)

Reclaiming Halloween

One of the most dreaded holidays for Christians is approaching. Halloween has developed over the centuries through pagan influences and Celtic roots. Even the early church played a part in the development of this holiday when in 609, Pope Boniface IV re-dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to "St Mary and all martyrs,"[1] and later Pope Gregory III's (731–741) founding of a public gathering in St Peter's for the artifacts "of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors".[2] Over the course of time, the holiday developed and shifted. "Originally celebrated as the night before All Saints' Day, Christians chose November first to honor their many saints. The night before was called All Saints' Eve or hallowed eve meaning holy evening."[3] Hallows Eve later became known as Halloween.

The historical significance of October 31st continues with the posting of Martin Luther’s “The 95 Thesis.” On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther’s initial letter known as, "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," addressed the sale of indulgences to Albrecht, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg.[4] This letter later became known as “The 95 Thesis.” This year, 2017, is the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day, which spread Protestantism across Europe. “The impact of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation has been enormous on global Christianity. In contrast to the extra-biblical traditions and works-based practices of Roman Catholicism, Luther called the Church back to the good news of salvation by grace alone through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).”[5]

For many people, this holiday will be a nice relief from the conversations on politics, a world in chaos, and an economy that is crushing families. Many churches will offer alternatives for believers to take their children to so that parents and their children do not have to endure all the images and worst aspects of what Halloween has become. Many Christians who stay home will choose to not participate by keeping their lights off and not answering their door to the “Trick or Treat” calls. Instead, they will escape to their TV, with their family and ignore the holiday.

Unfortunately, the church and Christians are missing the greatest opportunity for evangelism. Many Christians shudder at the thought of approaching a stranger to share Christ, but on October 31st lost children and parents will come knocking on your door. This could be the greatest opportunity for you to introduce Christ to your neighbors this year. Let me offer a few ideas for you to consider help you and your family honor Christ this Halloween.

·       Choose a Biblical costume for you to wear when answering your door. Be Christ, Moses, or one of the disciples. Engage those who knock and share the story of your character.
·       Use the old-fashioned approach and purchase tracts to distribute in addition to candy. Jewish customs were to rub honey on the lips of the children after reading the Torah. The Word of God is sweet and what better way to help children understand the sweetness of Christ.
·       Purchase little favor bags (like used for children birthday parties). Every character is appropriate in this season of costumes. Put candy, a little New Testament or promise book, tract, and/or invite to church in the bag, so it all stays together.
·       Get your Christmas decorations out early. Put your outdoor nativity up, or go and invest in one. Ask children when they come, “Do you know the story of Jesus?”
·       On this gruesome holiday, share the most gruesome story of all. Put up three crosses in your yard. You could leave them bare, or cover them with blood and three nails appropriately placed. When the holiday guest arrive ask, “Do you know the story of the cross?”
·       Have a prayer station. Collect prayer request and pray for those who request prayer.
·       Turn your yard into a mini-festival. Ask other Christians to join you. This festival could include an outdoor movie, a Bounce House, Hot Chocolate or Coffee, face painting, bean toss, popcorn, cookie decorating, Karaoke, or S’mores.
·       If you are part of a church that is not doing anything, provide your congregation handfuls of flyers to distribute to those who visit their homes. On these flyers, do not put your picture, but put the Gospel message, upcoming church events for the family, and support services your church offers for marriages and families.
·       If you are part of a church hosting an event, be sure it includes an evangelism opportunity for all who come.

The excitement is building as we anticipate this year’s Halloween outreach. Last year we prepared 300 individual bags of candy for all who visited our mini festival. While ghouls and goblins lined the streets, our home was a welcome sight for families with small children. By the end of the night, over 500 kids with their guardians stopped by our house for Halloween fun. This means about 1,000 people participated in our neighborhood outreach. We could not have done it without our 16 faithful volunteers who helped us distribute popcorn, hot chocolate, coffee, and of course, candy, while others staffed the bounce house, monitored the outdoor movie, helped with cookie decoration, or painted the faces of kids. This year we are expanding our outreach by preparing 500 bags (candy and tracts), including a second bounce house and a providing a tent for prayer and sharing the Gospel.
We are planting seeds. What will you be doing this Halloween?

Restoration!

Restoration

Zechariah 10:1 Ask rain from the LORD in the season of the spring rain, from the LORD who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field.

As well noted by many and recognized publicly by Franklin Graham, the rain during the inauguration of President Donald Trump should awaken Christians everywhere that we have entered a season of restoration. Many have questioned how Evangelicals could vote for President Trump failing to see that the issues are far deeper than a man. God has always used flawed men to accomplish His tasks. The deeper issue was the need for ideology change and spiritual change. While President Trump will not be a perfect Christian leader, he will support larger ideological concerns that are Biblically more in line with the support of Israel, the humble place of power to promote peace, and policies that will not condone sin (abortion, sexual immorality, etc.).
As we look to this season of restoration, let us embrace the fullness of what God desires to do and not become distracted by the cries of those caught in the traps of their sin or the political malaise of discontent. For those entrapped by sin and sinful thinking, may the scales from their eyes be removed. God is all about restoring those good things that have been lost in our lives. Restoration is the returning of things once possessed. God’s activity in the earth today should encourage us that He is God! And God is still active and knows the outcome. Restoration is manifesting itself in several different ways.

2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Relationship Restoration

One manifestation is the restoring of relationships. Some of these relationships are long lost friendships. Some are broken or strained family relationships. In either case, God wants to restore and bring to wholeness these relationships in our lives. Restoration of these relationships is not because there was a problem, but you have simply lost touch with one another. This season should encourage you to reach out to those where relationships have been strained or lost and allow God’s restoring work to happen. Allow the Holy Spirit to help you recall relationships that have simply faded and believe for opportunities of restoration. Have you been “holding” on for a prodigal to come home? Well, this is the season of Restoration!

Zechariah 9:12 says
"Return to the stronghold (of security and prosperity), you prisoners of hope; even today do I declare that I will restore double your former prosperity to you."

Prosperity Restoration

Another manifestation is the restoring of prosperity. Prosperity is more than finances. Prosperity is health, happiness, and peace in our lives. Many have slipped into worry and doubt about God and His ability to keep us and provide health, happiness and peace. His hand is not too short. He is still in the miracle working business. Don’t lean to your own understanding, but find yourself in His understanding. Prosperity is also about finances. God will begin to show Himself in our lives in this area if we dare to trust Him. Be ready to sell or rent property. Be ready to receive pay raises or even get a new job. Focus every loss on what God can restore. Our faith in Him cannot waver, but must remain steadfast. Trust Him completely.

Listen to me, O isles and coastlands, and hearken, you peoples from afar. The Lord has called me from the womb; from the body of my mother He has named my name. And He has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand has He hid me and made me a polished arrow; in His quiver has He kept me close and concealed me. And [the Lord] said to me, You are My servant, Israel [you who strive with God and with men and prevail], in whom I will be glorified.

Then I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in empty futility; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense is with my God.

And now, says the Lord—Who formed me from the womb to be His servant to bring Jacob back to Him and that Israel might be gathered to Him and not be swept away, for I am honorable in the eyes of the Lord and my God has become my strength— He says, It is too light a thing that you should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors [of the judgments] of Israel; I will also give you for a light to the nations, that My salvation may extend to the end of the earth.

Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, Israel’s Holy One, to him whom man rejects and despises, to him whom the nations abhor, to the servant of rulers: Kings shall see you and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, Who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, Who has chosen you.

Thus says the Lord, In an acceptable and favorable time I have heard and answered you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you; and I will preserve you and give you for a covenant to the people, to raise up and establish the land [from its present state of ruin] and to apportion and cause them to inherit the desolate [moral wastes of heathenism, their] heritages, Saying to those who are bound, Come forth, and to those who are in [spiritual] darkness, Show yourselves [come into the light of the Sun of righteousness]. They shall feed in all the ways [in which they go], and their pastures shall be [not in deserts, but] on all the bare [grass-covered] hills. They will not hunger or thirst, neither will mirage [mislead] or scorching wind or sun smite them; for He Who has mercy on them will lead them, and by springs of water will He guide them. And I will make all My mountains a way, and My highways will be raised up. Behold, these shall come from afar—and, behold, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim (China).

Sing for joy, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people and will have compassion upon His afflicted.

But Zion [Jerusalem, her people as seen in captivity] said, The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.

[And the Lord answered] Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, they may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands; [O Zion] your walls are continually before Me. Your children and your builders make haste; your destroyers and those who laid you waste go forth from you. Lift up your eyes round about and see [the returning exiles, ready to rebuild Jerusalem]; all these gather together and come to you. As I live, says the Lord, you [Zion] shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament and bind them on you as a bride does.

For your waste and desolate places and your land [once the scene] of destruction surely now [in coming years] will be too narrow to accommodate the population, and those who once swallowed you up will be far away. The children of your bereavement [born during your captivity] shall yet say in your ears, The place is too narrow for me; make room for me, that I may live. Then [Zion], you will say in your heart, Who has borne me all these children, seeing that I lost my offspring and am alone and barren and unfruitful, an exile put away and wandering hither and thither? And who brought them up? Behold, I was left alone [put away by the Lord, my Husband]; from where then did all these children come?

Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up My hand to the Gentile nations and set up My standard and raise high My signal banner to the peoples; and they will bring your sons in the bosom of their garments, and your daughters will be carried upon their shoulders. And kings shall be your foster fathers and guardians, and their queens your nursing mothers. They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth and lick up the dust of your feet; and you shall know [with an acquaintance and understanding based on and grounded in personal experience] that I am the Lord; for they shall not be put to shame who wait for, look for, hope for, and expect Me.

Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives of the just be delivered? For thus says the Lord: Even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the prey of the terrible will be delivered; for I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will give safety to your children and ease them. And I will make those who oppress you consume themselves [in mutually destructive wars], thus eating their own flesh; and they will be drunk with their own blood, as with sweet wine; and all flesh will know [with a knowledge grounded in personal experience] that I, the Lord, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
(Isaiah 49, AMPC)

Church Restoration

During this season of restoration, we will begin to see the Church thrive. God is gathering the sheep. Congregations will begin to grow. There will be some shifting of sheep among the individual churches. Where members have drifted away in the past, they will return. God is wooing those sheep that have drifted away from their primary pasture of service. He is wooing them to return to the shepherd they have been called to serve and follow. Those Christians who have lost their way in their journey with God will sense the need to return as well. Be ready to welcome them all. Allow God’s restorative power through love and acceptance to bring the church to wholeness.

Consequently, from now on we estimate and regard no one from a [purely] human point of view [in terms of natural standards of value]. [No] even though we once did estimate Christ from a human viewpoint and as a man, yet now [we have such knowledge of Him that] we know Him no longer [in terms of the flesh]. Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! But all things are from God, Who through Jesus Christ reconciled us to Himself [received us into favor, brought us into harmony with Himself] and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation [that by word and deed we might aim to bring others into harmony with Him]. It was God [personally present] in Christ, reconciling and restoring the world to favor with Himself, not counting up and holding against [men] their trespasses [but cancelling them], and committing to us the message of reconciliation (of the restoration to favor). So we are Christ’s ambassadors, God making His appeal as it were through us. We [as Christ’s personal representatives] beg you for His sake to lay hold of the divine favor [now offered you] and be reconciled to God. For our sake He made Christ [virtually] to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in and through Him we might become [endued with, viewed as being in, and examples of] the righteousness of God [what we ought to be, approved and acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness]. (2 Corinthians 5:16-21, AMPC)

Evangelism Restoration

Lastly, the real work of restoration has begun the winning of the lost. Some have prayed for years or even given up on the lost. This is a season of restoration. God is all about restoring relationship with those who have not trusted Him in the past. Reach out of your places of comfort and welcome those who are searching! Welcome them in your home, your lunch times, and your schedules. Make room for the lost. Make room for them to find hope and healing! God’s restorative work is being released in the earth. This can be the greatest season of restoration if we will be diligent about serving, loving and caring for people. It is not about growing a church, but it is all about leading people to be a part of the Kingdom of God! Be watchful of those around you and be ready to respond to their needs.

Sing, O barren one, you who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who did not travail with child! For the [spiritual] children of the desolate one will be more than the children of the married wife, says the Lord. Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; spare not; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes, For you will spread abroad to the right hand and to the left; and your offspring will possess the nations and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. Fear not, for you shall not be ashamed; neither be confounded and depressed, for you shall not be put to shame. For you shall forget the shame of your youth, and you shall not [seriously] remember the reproach of your widowhood any more. For your Maker is your Husband—the Lord of hosts is His name—and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; the God of the whole earth He is called. For the Lord has called you like a woman forsaken, grieved in spirit, and heartsore—even a wife [wooed and won] in youth, when she is [later] refused and scorned, says your God.

For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion and mercy I will gather you [to Me] again. In a little burst of wrath I hid My face from you for a moment, but with age-enduring love and kindness I will have compassion and mercy on you, says the Lord, your Redeemer.

For this is like the days of Noah to Me; as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you. For though the mountains should depart and the hills be shaken or removed, yet My love and kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace and completeness be removed, says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.

O you afflicted [city], storm-tossed and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in fair colors [in antimony to enhance their brilliance] and lay your foundations with sapphires. And I will make your windows and pinnacles of [sparkling] agates or rubies, and your gates of [shining] carbuncles, and all your walls [of your enclosures] of precious stones. And all your [spiritual] children shall be disciples [taught by the Lord and obedient to His will], and great shall be the peace and undisturbed composure of your children. You shall establish yourself in righteousness (rightness, in conformity with God’s will and order): you shall be far from even the thought of oppression or destruction, for you shall not fear, and from terror, for it shall not come near you. Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you shall fall and surrender to you. Behold, I have created the smith who blows on the fire of coals and who produces a weapon for its purpose; and I have created the devastator to destroy. But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong. This [peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord [those in whom the ideal Servant of the Lord is reproduced]; this is the righteousness or the vindication which they obtain from Me [this is that which I impart to them as their justification], says the Lord.

(Isaiah 54, AMPC)

Legislating Morality

Legislating Morality

The recent win of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States is a direct result of the Evangelical voter turnout.[i] The pending and future appointments of Supreme Court Justices motivated the call to action given by many spiritual leaders, holding prayer vigils, and activating their congregants hoping to slow the moral decline and the turning of a nation from Biblical values. Franklin Graham led prayer vigils in all 50 states and the night before the election held a national prayer vigil on FaceBook.[ii] While Evangelicals celebrate the victory obtained through prayer, let us not forget that more is required.

Jay Sekulow stated in an article that appeared in the December 1990 issue of Charisma magazine, “If anyone tells you that you cannot legislate morality, remember that legislation IS morality.”[iii] Merriam-Webster defines morality as “beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior.”[iv] Therefore, we can conclude whatever we hold as right behavior and wrong behavior will be what is legislated. The appointment of Supreme Court Justices’ will secure conservative Constitutional thinking. However, it will not change the beliefs of individuals to adhere to the Biblical moral code.

Today, our nations’ morals are drifting because many do not know Jehovah God, by making Jesus Christ their personal Savior, and submitting to the moral code of the Bible as the standard to live by. Similarly, many Christians do not adhere to the moral code of the Bible and its standards. “Currently, about four in 10 U.S. adults qualify as ‘unchurched’ under Barna’s definition (38%). Unchurched adults have not attended a church service, except for a holiday or special occasion, at any time within the past six months.”[v] “Americans are becoming more liberal on social issues, as evidenced not only by the uptick in the percentage describing themselves as socially liberal, but also by their increasing willingness to say that a number of previously frowned-upon behaviors are morally acceptable.”[vi] While many Americans profess their belief as Christians, less than half attend church on any frequency.[vii]

In order to save our nation from moral failure, Christians need to embrace real change away from the wicked ways in their ranks. While prayer may have secured the Supreme Court for a season, they adjudicate laws created by the legislative body, which submits to the will of the people. Eventually, the introduction of Constitutional Amendments secured by the will of the people will permanently legislate unrighteousness. The Supreme Court would then be obligated to adjudicate according to the amendment and the totality of the Constitution.

If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14, (AMPC))

While embracing 2 Chronicles 7:14 as the mandate for prayer, the Church and Christians have obtained an opportunity for a pause in moral decay. However, the Church must now turn to the second half of that passage to reverse the moral decline and secure Biblical values for our nation. They must “turn from their wicked ways.” If the church does not turn from their wicked ways, the nation will increase in wickedness slipping further from Biblical moral values. The only long lasting hope for our nation is to secure righteousness in the hearts of people. Here are a few “wicked ways” for churches and Christians to exam and embrace their role in helping hold to a righteous standard.

The wicked way of Judgement

Imagine a church were God delivers judgement not man. July 1, 2016, askportia.com posted an article, “25 Reasons People Don’t Go to Church.”[viii] The first reason was the length of service time. However, the second reason was “Fear of being judged.” Judgement belongs to God.

One only is the Lawgiver and Judge Who is able to save and to destroy [the One Who has the absolute power of life and death]. [But you] who are you that [you presume to] pass judgment on your neighbor? (James 4:12, AMPC)

While there is Biblical support for those in authority to exam, mark, and identify “snakes in the grass (Genesis 3, Proverbs 26:25),” these mandates were never meant to be used on fellow believers. Many non-believers view church members as snakes waiting to consume one another. The church has created and provided an atmosphere for devouring our own when another stumbles or falls instead of loving them into right relationship with God. James 5:16 provides the understanding of a healthy environment for believers.

Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]. (James 5:16, AMPC)

Believers’ inability to confess faults to one another hinders the power of prayer and its ability to perform dynamic workings and healing in their life. Maybe this is why we do not witness miracles today when we pray for those who are sick or in need. Many churches today do not create or encourage environments where real authentic relationships of trust and maturity develop that provide for this level of mutual confession of faults, pray, and healing.

Many churches and pastors turn to small groups as the answer and response, but have had little success. For some, the ulterior motive of numerical growth outweighs the principle of spiritual growth. The Senior Pastor and leaders must model real authentic relationships throughout the organization. If you are a Pastor, you may be reluctant to share your stumbles, or falls with congregants and this boundary may be appropriate, however, it does not excuse the need for this environment in your life, and in your church. While pastors may need to reserve some confession for appropriate audiences, they can still model a depth of relationship that allows confession, prayer, and healing. Each body of believers is unique, so there is not a “one solution fits all” that can be given. However, each Christian, and each Pastor must create, foster, and enable environments where the establishment of serious authentic Christian relationships secure the fulfilment of James 5:16.

The Wicked Way within Marriage

Imagine a church where the success of marriage within the church was better than the rest of society. How much more attractive would Christ be as the answer to marital problems? Marriage is the deepest earthly relationship by which God has chosen to relate the type of relationship He desires with mankind (Jesus is the bridegroom; the church is the bride, the marriage supper of the lamb, the expression of God’s love). We have allowed the marriage relationship within the church to sink to that of a civil contract as seen by the divorce rate of believers equal to those of non-believers. Churches and believers must embrace to covenant aspects of marriage and change the tide of divorce in their ranks.

Many churches today do not see the need for them to provide help, direction, support for the formulating of marriage relationships, and the sustaining, and support for the marriage covenant. Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott have introduced a process of marriage mentoring to create a net for married couples who are in trouble, or even before trouble begins. Many churches and leaders avoid the aspect of teaching divorce as sin. While no one caught in the snares of divorce welcomes it, the church provides little direction, help, or support to its avoidance. Sadly, couples drift from attendance and gossip carries the news.

The Wicked Way within Justice

Imagine a church that is able to set aside political ranker and stand together on issues of injustice. The inability of the church to effectively deal with injustice has caused the greatest division. As is commonly known, the most divided day of the week is Sunday Morning. The divide is evident in the Evangelical vote division, where nearly 80% of white Evangelical voters chose Trump, while Evangelicals of color largely favored Clinton.[ix] Evangelicals have allowed political systems to either silence their voice or become their voice for injustice. God’s Kingdom is not groups of kingdoms as portrayed in the Game of Thrones, who adhere to one king. God’s Kingdom is only one kingdom and has only one king.

For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. For as many [of you] as were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union and communion with Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah] have put on (clothed yourselves with) Christ. There is [now no distinction] neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ [are in Him Who is Abraham’s Seed], then you are Abraham’s offspring and [spiritual] heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:26-29, AMPC)

Injustice is the principle issue separating Evangelicals on race. Fear has captivated many Christians leaving them bound in their own communities, while many of the poor, needy, mistreated, and hurting are fending for themselves. While the atmosphere is politically charged, what outreach has Pastors and leaders of varying church communities engaged in with each other. Have you swapped pulpits, or exchanged musical elements of worship? Most fear and injustice continues today, because of a lack of relationships and understanding. Many Evangelicals do great works in missions, but fail in community missions. Healing, reconciliation, and love are all expressions the church can offer to help overcome injustice. Polarization will continue until the church responds and changes from their wicked way.

The Wicked Way within Life and Death

Imagine a pro-life church with a list of 60 million couples desiring to adopt babies, financially supporting birth mothers until the child is born, supporting them legally through the adoption process, and then supporting those mothers for several months in the re-establishment of their personal life. Most of our society views the church offering no real alternative and consider most Christians as judging and harassing women approaching abortion clinics. We should never minimize the stance for life; however, the church should offer real solutions. A home for every child should be the goal of the church. The church could give reason for those considering abortion to choose life. With more than 60 million abortions since 1973 and current rate of one million abortions per year, the voice of the church must ring out not with judgement and condemnation, but with love of life and justice.[x] For many abortion is the greatest form of injustice, the child has no voice. In addition, mothers are led to believe that it is simple the removal of tissue, while later in life they carry the weight of the injustice of their decision.

Nothing is more depressing than entering a church where there is no life, every person dwells in gloom and despair, and death consumes the message of life. While realities can never be ignored, Christ secured life, and abundance of life for all (John 10:10). Death has drawn mankind since Adam and Eve. Most of the world’s entertainment focuses on death. For many, the fascination with death is the unknown. Alan Danielson in an article on churchleaders.com identifies seven secrets of life-giving church culture as language, icons, celebrations, relationships, boarders, fashion, and values.[xi] Life-giving churches where the language is understood; icons or pictures speak volumes; celebrations are continual; relationships are authentic; boarders of purpose and vision unite congregants; fashion is complimentary to those in fellowship (I Corinthians 9:22); and core values fosters community. Christ is the life-giver and all who turn to Him find life. The power of transformation is hard work. It requires investment of time and resources. It requires focus of the mission of the church to make disciples (remember the Great Commission, Matthew 28:16-20). Vacant today in many churches is the release and belief of the transformative work of Christ. When there is the need for counseling, pastors should be ready to provide or have a list of Christian counselors available. Tending to sheep is dirty work, and requires steady hands and open hearts.

Conclusion

As we search for healing in our land we again reference 2nd Chronicles 14:7, which starts with “If My people…” addressing those who are followers of God. Many Evangelicals believe that prayer has provided a much-needed victory. However, the church must assist in fulfilling their role in the healing of our land by changing from their wicked ways.
